Washington County, Doniphan West FFA Members Win State Star Awards

Washington County FFA members, Tyler Rose and Alex Goeckel, and Doniphan West FFA member Kayla Schmitz were awarded the state’s top honors of Kansas FFA Star Farmer, Star in Ag Placement, and Star in Agribusiness, respectively. They were honored during Friday's final session of the 82nd Kansas FFA Convention on the Kansas State University campus.


Each year, the Kansas FFA Association recognizes three FFA members who have the top Supervised Agricultural Experience programs with the Star Farmer, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Agriculture Placement awards.

Rose earned the state Star Farmer award for his Diversified Agricultural Production SAE which includes 84 head of cattle and approximately 84 acres of rented crop land. His parents are Dewayne and JoAnn Rose.

Goeckel, named Kansas FFA Star in Ag Placement, works in the beef and swine industries for his Diversified Livestock Production SAE. He began in his father’s cow-calf and pork operations before moving on to work with 800 sows at Brabec Farms and Rose Farms’ 1,500-head feedlot and 300 cow-calf ranch. He now works for Kansas State University’s swine unit. He is the son of Doug and Teryl Goeckel. The Washington County FFA advisor is John Kern.

In her Ag Sales SAE project, Schmitz owns and operates a lawn maintenance business. She cares for approximately 50 properties from April to November using three lawnmowers. She also offers composting and fertilizer services. She is the daughter of Elmer and Laura Schmitz and her advisors are her father and KaCee Thompson.

Other finalists for Star Farmer were Ben Gleason, Mission Valley FFA; Phillip Wilson, Marysville FFA; William Poland, Ellis FFA; Erin Mosiman, Newton FFA; Bethany Ericson, Uniontown FFA; and Kelsey Hayes, Jetmore FFA.

Finalists for Star in Ag Placement were Garrett Lowe, Jayhawk-Linn FFA; Ethan Phillips, Holton FFA; William Overmiller, Smith Center; Alex Hajek, Centre; Kolt DeLange, Girard; and Jennifer Ochs, Jetmore FFA.

Finalists for Star in Agribusiness were Jesse Page, Prairie View FFA and Joseph Rundle, Washington County FFA.
